PISTONS TAB MO CHEEKS AS NEXT HEAD COACHMaurice Cheeks has agreed to become the next head coach of the Detroit Pistons. Cheeks is recognized as one of the greatest point guards in NBA history and has head coaching stints in Portland and Philadelphia. Cheeks most recently was top assistant coach for the Oklahoma City Thunder and played a key role in the development of All-Star guard Russell Westbrook. The Pistons could be looking for Cheeks to work some of that magic on their young guard Brandon Knight.

BUFFALO PARTS WAYS WITH TARVARIS … Tarvaris Jackson expected to be competing this summer for the Buffalo Bills starting quarterback job. Jackson is now out of a job, the Bills have released him. Jackson’s exit appears to have opened the door a little wider for 1st round pick EJ Manuel as he competes this summer for the starting job with Kevin Kolb.

JETER BACK ON THE FIELDDerek Jeter has yet to play this season for the New York Yankees and isn’t expected back until after the All-Star break. However, there is a glimpse of good news for Yankees fans. As reported by ESPNNew, Jeter is back on the field, taking grounders and swinging the bat again. It’s the first time Jeter has participated in these particular baseball activities since April when he reinjured the ankle he fractured last season in the Yankees ALCS loss to the Detroit Tigers. Jeter turns 39 on June 26th.

Chad Johnson Slaps Attorney On Butt, Judge Gives Him 30 Days In Jail

Chad Johnson’s road back to the NFL just became a little more difficult to travel.

Johnson was sentenced to 30 days in jail for violating his probation. According to TMZ, Johnson was facing a plea deal that would have kept him out of jail. That apparently went out the window when Johnson decided to slap his attorney playfully on the butt, why I don’t know. This didn’t go over well with Broward County Judge Kathleen Mchugh who decided that Johnson might need 30 days behind bars to think about things since he clearly hasn’t gotten the point yet.

How much more needs to be done to one’s reputation before Johnson understands truly how bad this is making him look?

NBA Player Jason Collins 1st Active Athlete To Announce He’s Gay

Jason Collins could not have stated it any better than he did on his Twitter account, he made the decision to choose the road less traveled, but he’s not walking alone.

In an interview / first person essay with Sports Illustrated, NBA center Jason Collins announced that he’s gay, becoming the first active player in a major American team sport to announce that he is gay. Collins was originally drafted by the Houston Rockets in 2001 out of Stanford and was acquired in a draft-day trade by the New Jersey Nets. He has sustained a solid NBA  career with stints in New Jersey, Memphis, Minnesota, Atlanta, Boston and most recently Washington. He’s currently an NBA free agent and intends to continue playing.

Collins is receiving a great deal of support from his NBA peers including his twin brother Jarron who played 10 seasons in the NBA and is working as an NBA scout for the Los Angeles Clippers and from Kobe Bryant. Bryant, like many professional athletes took to twitter to offer their support for Collins and his announcement.

Former President Bill Clinton also threw his support towards Collins:

“Jason’s announcement today is an important moment for professional sports and in the history of the LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender] community,” he said in a statement. “It is also the straightforward statement of a good man who wants no more than what so many of us seek: to be able to be who we are; to do our work; to build families and to contribute to our communities.”

By making this courageous announcement Collins opened a door possibly for other athletes who might be struggling with the decision to walk through. He’s going to face adversity and quite possibly even some hate because of it, however I applaud him for making sure that the choice to make this announcement was his and his only.

“All the support I have received today is truly inspirational. I knew that I was choosing the road less traveled but I’m not walking alone.” – Jason Collins, Twitter @jasoncollins34
